Use a roof-size example without climbing a ladder
Keep the 2,000-square-foot example or enter roof area you already know. This tool shows an architectural shingle budget and explains what the property inspection still needs to resolve.
- Supported size
- 1,500 to 3,500 square feet of roof surface.
- Supported covering
- Architectural asphalt only, with one shingle layer removed.
Calculate an architectural shingle budget
This planning model covers 1,500 to 3,500 square feet of roof surface. You can use it without climbing a ladder.
Keep the 2,000 sq. ft. example, or enter an area you already know. Roof footprint means the area covered, not total living space.
Keep the 6:12 example unless you already know the pitch. Pitch helps check material suitability.
Planning budget example
Planning example for 2,000 sq. ft. of actual roof surface, using architectural asphalt shingles. Ordinary tear-off is included.
Includes ordinary one-layer removal. Extra layers, damaged decking, complex access and additional roof details change the project price.
Discuss your roof projectArchitectural asphalt replacement planning range, with ordinary one-layer tear off. Actual roof condition and scope determine the project price.
Kansas City metro planning figures, checked October 27, 2026.
How this planning range works
The October 2026 Kansas City metro planning basis is $4 to $6 per square foot of measured roof surface for architectural asphalt shingles. A roofing square equals 100 square feet. Supported examples range from 1,500 to 3,500 roof square feet.
The basis includes removal of one shingle layer, synthetic underlayment, eave and valley ice-and-water protection, flashing where needed, ridge venting and haul away. Hidden deck repairs, extra layers and unusual access are not fixed by this example.
Roof footprint converts using the entered pitch; it is not living area. Pitch checks material suitability and area conversion, without adding an unsupported price multiplier. Asphalt shingles need at least 2:12 slope. Commercial systems and other coverings need their own scope.
Why a roof quote changes
A calculated total is the beginning of a budget discussion, not the entire replacement scope.
The visible work
Roof size, access, roof shape, tear off and the selected assembly affect labor and materials. The model includes ordinary removal of one shingle layer.
The hidden work
Deck damage becomes clear as old roofing comes off. Extra wood repairs and other uncovered defects need to be settled from the actual roof, rather than concealed inside an online estimate.
