Choose the covering with the assembly in mind
Shingle choice affects the roof’s appearance and product options. The dependable roof still comes from the covering, attachment and water-control details working together.
- Appearance
- Profile, color blend and the house as a whole.
- Performance
- The selected product’s classification and correct installation.
Compare asphalt shingle choices
Product lines vary. Use the actual selected product rather than assume every shingle in a category has the same terms.
| Type | Appearance and construction | Decision to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Three-tab | Appearance and constructionA comparatively flat, regular tab pattern from a single-layer profile. | Decision to resolveProduct availability, roof appearance and the particular wind/installation requirements. |
| Architectural | Appearance and constructionA laminated profile with more depth and an irregular pattern. | Decision to resolveColor blend, product weight, fastening details and any impact classification of the selected line. |
| Designer | Appearance and constructionA thicker or shaped profile intended to suggest slate, wood or another distinctive pattern. | Decision to resolveAppearance at full-roof scale, accessories and whether the chosen assembly suits the roof. |
| Impact-classified option | Appearance and constructionA tested product available within certain shingle lines, rather than a separate roof assembly. | Decision to resolveThe exact test classification and insurer’s terms. An impact rating does not make a roof hail-proof. |
Choose a color that belongs to the whole house
Brick, siding, trim and roof pitch all change how a shingle blend reads. Small samples show the granules; a full roof shows the pattern. Sun, shade and viewing distance affect the color you see.
The covering also needs matching ridge caps, starter details and flashings that fit the assembly. A designer field shingle does not remove the need to plan those less visible components.
If the roof has a low-slope porch or addition, that surface may need a different system. GAF identifies 2:12 as the minimum slope for its asphalt shingles, with specific instructions for lower slopes within the permitted range.

A product label is only part of the roof decision
The installation and the actual terms still matter.
The physical assembly
Underlayment, ice barrier, fastening, ventilation and flashing are planned with the chosen shingle. Replacing the finish alone does not repair damaged wood beneath it.
The product and project terms
Material warranties and workmanship terms differ. Product registration, installation and exclusions govern the actual coverage. No generic category name establishes those terms.
